Artist Talk on Friday, March 9 at 5pm

Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce a new permanent light installation by Ivan Navarro, which will be unveiled on March 7, 2012. A meditation on the fence motif explored in previous works, Navarro’s latest outdoor installation will illuminate the façade of Paul Kasmin SHOP, a storefront at 511 West 27 street. A talk with the artist, focusing on his recent project Nacht und Nebel in Rome, presented by Fondazione VOLUME! in collaboration with the Embassy of Chile in Italy, will take place at the shop on Friday, March 9 at 5pm.

Connoting a passageway, Navarro’s neon light sculpture will be installed above the shop’s large glass doors. The sculpture measures 20 x 84 inches and is made of vintage green Uranium glass. A variation of this piece will be available for sale as an edition.

Navarro’s neon fence installations reference the function of ordinary electric fences, but their primary effect is visual. In the words of the architect Tadao Ando, fences and walls have a compelling visual power: “they have the power to divide space, transfigure place, and create new domains. Walls are the most basic element of architecture, but they can also be the most enriching."

Iván Navarro is known internationally for his socio-politically charged sculptures of neon, fluorescent and incandescent light.  In 2009, he represented Chile in at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Recent solo and group exhibitions include the Prospect.2 Biennial in New Orleans (2011); Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York (2010); Distrito 4 in Madrid (2010); Museum on the Seam in Jerusalem, Israel (2010); Tierra de Nadie in Caja de Burgos, Spain (2010);  Towner Contemporary Art Museum in Eastbourne, UK and Galerie Daniel Templon, Paris (2009); Greenaway Gallery-Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts in Australia (2008);  Centro Cultural Matucana 100 in Santiago, Chile (2007); Witte de Witt in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2006); and MOCA at Goldman Warehouse in Miami (2006). He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
